The Third Reich

Young Hitler came to Munich before World War II began. It was here in Munich where the National Socialist German Workers‘ Party (NSDAP) was founded and the Beer Hall Putsch failed in November of 1923. Due to this Adolf Hitler awarded Munich the title “Capital of the Movement” (“Hauptstadt der Bewegung”) in 1935; in addition the city was counted amongst the five “Führer-Towns” (“Führerstädte”), for which gigantic conversion plans were drafted.
Many Third Reich buildings were destroyed during World War II, but by no means all of them – first up the “Führer-buildings” (“Führerbauten”) at the King’s Square (Königsplatz), where the NSDAP party headquarter resided. With a look into the originally preserved “Führer-buildings” (at present the academy of music) – the place where in 1938 the Munich Agreement was sealed - we start the tour. The adjacent King’s square with its neoclassical character was used to stage the party during the Nazi era.
During this tour we won’t only pass numerous buildings from the Nazi era like the House of Art (during the Nazi era: “House of German Art”) or the “experimental constructions” (“Versuchsbauten für die Südstadt”), a combination of apartment blocks and bunkers. We will also remind you of specific places of the reign of terror and the resistance against the dictatorship. These include the former Gestapo-headquarter, the university with its memorial for the resistance group “White Rose” (“Weisse Rose”), the monument for the victims of the Nazi-tyranny and the Palace of Justice, where the members of the “White Rose” were sentenced to death.
